EMT training involves approximately 16 weeks of classroom and practical instruction. However, each class is different.
The basic EMT course is provided free of charge by the squad after 6 months of approved active service.
You can join as a cadet from the age of 15-18.
When you turn 18 you will be sworn in as a EMS member.
There is no maximum age to join as a member as long as you can perform the duties!
EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) vs. EMR (Emergency Medical Responder).
TFEMS has both EMT's and EMR's on our squad and both are utilized greatly. Typically members start as EMR's, to make sure that EMS is something they enjoy and then move on to EMT school as it is a lot longer and more tedious.
Emergency Medical Technician
An EMT is one trained by the State of New Jersey in designated hospitals throughout the area. This training qualifies the member to manage any level of emergency patient care. The EMT is trained in all specialized equipment and techniques allowed by the State of New Jersey.
Emergency Medical Responder
This is the basic level of training which transfers enough knowledge to allow confidence in lifting and moving the patient as well as supporting many of the functions of basic patient care. This level of training is provided internally by the squad instructors. The First Responder works with members who possess a more specialized level of training, EMT.
We accept applicants from our surrounding neighbors. Other towns are considered on a case-by-case basis.
TFEMS has multiple CPR Instructors. Once you join you will be required to take a CPR class if you do not have your CPR card prior to joining, Basic First Aid, and Lifting and Carrying. These are some of the minimum requirement to ride on a TFEMS ambulance.
Since TFEMS is an All-Volunteer Squad, there is no requirements on how many calls you must respond to. We are part of a LOSAP program which is based on the percentage of calls / training / meetings you attend. We appreciate any time that a member can give to the squad, as they are vital for what we do!
